Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Roman 12:2
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind? How do you renew your mind? Your mind will be renewed and your life transformed through reading and meditating on God’s word to you in Sacred Scripture. The culture fills your mind with all kinds of garbage, contrary to the truth of God’s Word. By returning to Scripture, preferably daily, you will be grounded in sacred truth.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
We are living in a post-Christian culture. For two millennia, the center of all human history was salvation in Christ. Fewer and fewer people share the biblical worldview that supports marriage and family life. Truth is now whatever you want it to be and competing worldviews are redefining marriage and civil society. Instead of feasting on the truth of God’s Word, people are eating garbage from dumpsters. The fruit of these twisted worldviews is loneliness, depression and broken lives.
But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. Proverbs 4:19
This situation is not unique to our times. In Jesus’ day, marriage had also become expendable for even the most insignificant reasons such as a botched meal or an unkempt house. The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by questioning Him on the lawfulness of divorce. Here is how Jesus dealt with the cultural garbage of His time…
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. Matthew 19:4-8
Jesus addressed the cultural norm by pointing back to God’s original plan for marriage – one man, one woman, for life. Divorce had crept into their culture because of hardened hearts and Jesus pointed the people to the goodness, beauty and truth of God’s plan for marriage. Likewise, in the midst of today’s cultural confusion concerning the sanctity of marriage and family, we need to look back to the beginning. We need to learn what God has to say on the matter by reading His Word. We also need to heed Mary’s words to the servants at the Wedding Feast at Cana:
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5
We need to obey with willing and humble hearts. God gives us His commands not as a burden but as a blessing. He knows what will bring us true happiness and joy. The world will never satisfy. Our hearts will be restless until they rest in God’s loving arms. If you need direction, seek God’s will for you in sacred Scripture. Mediate on it day and night. If you obey God, He will renew your mind and transform your life.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9
May the peace of God fill your heart with joy as you trust Him with all your heart.
