Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing. 1 Kings 18:21
How often do you wonder if you should wait for your marriage to be reconciled? Have you been standing but have become lonely, weary, double-minded and lost your hope? I pray that you will read 1 Kings Chapter 18 this weekend. My prayer is that you will be touched by the Holy Spirit, receiving a renewed hope in the power of your Lord God.
I hate double-minded men, but I love your law. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Psalm 119:113-116
Elijah was sent by God to speak the truth again to Ahab and disobedient Israel. Obadiah, was a devout believer, but when Elijah told him to tell Ahab that Elijah was there to talk to him, he also became fearful to the point that he thought he, himself, might be killed. But Obadiah then obeyed Elijah, God’s prophet. You may be fearful of all that you are facing today, but obeying and loving your Lord is better than sacrifice.
But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22
You have a choice every day. Are you going to follow the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you going to surrender your will, your ways, your thoughts, ideas and life to the Lord or will you choose to do it your way? What is the Lord saying to you? Are you listening and obeying? Have you forgotten the promises and signs that the Lord has given you? Will you be a faithful stander to the end?
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Philippians 2:1-3
The Lord wants to take this trial and tragedy in your life and turn it around to good for His glory. He desires to heal and restore your marriage as God created marriage. He hates divorce and knows the severe consequences of divorce that can go on for years, especially in your childrens’ lives. Are you listening to your family and friends opinions or are you listening to the Lord?
“This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it – the LORD is his name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’” Jeremiah 33:2-3
Will you choose to trust the Lord knowing He will provide you with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment through the power of the Holy Spirit? Never forget the power of prayer and talking to the Lord daily, throughout your day. This is truly one of the main secrets to being able to walk on this spiritual journey with your Lord. The Holy Spirit is with you and His righteous right hand is holding your hand and guiding your every step on the narrow road of marriage restoration.
Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel to make a choice between following God or following Baal by calling down fire from Heaven. Baal did not answer their prayers, but Elijah prayed and God did answer his prayer! This resulted in a spiritual revival and ended the drought that the nation had been in. Elijah used the weapons of prayer, faith and trust. The Lord answered His prayers with power. Believe that your Lord will do the same for you!
The prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O LORD , God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD , answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD , are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD – he is God! The Lord – he is God!” 1 King 18:36-38
I love this prayer that Elijah prayed. May this be our prayer for all the spouses and children who have chosen another god other than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel who sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, who shed His blood and died on the cross for all sinners. Jesus arose three days later and God left us the Holy Spirit! Stop wavering, believe in the power of God forever and in all circumstances!
Lord, please speak to Your precious child that You love so much. They are standing in the gap for their spouse’s heart to be transformed and their marriage to be resurrected, restored, their love rekindled and rebuilt on the solid rock of Jesus Christ. Lord help them to stop listening to other people’s opinions and only listen to You. Holy Spirit, reveal God’s mighty power in different ways so everyone around them will know that You, O Lord, are God. Lord, may their beloved spouse fear God and be obedient to Your voice, now, suddenly! Holy Spirit, soften and turn their loved one’s heart back to You and then restore their marriage for Your glory. I pray this in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
