TIPS ON GETTING IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS DESPITE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

Are you getting your Christmas decorations out yet? Christmas is on its way! Are you making plans to start decorating your home? All three of my kids have started getting their homes ready for Christmas. They come over and help me do the same. I pray that you will start getting excited that Christmas is on its way, where we can celebrate the birth of our Savior and Lord!

Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.  Isaiah 9:7

Start praying and thinking about how you can celebrate the Lord’s birthday in your own family. Find a Christmas program that you can attend. Ask a friend or a loved one to go, and share the powerful message with someone else who may not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of their life.

I know you may feel like you want to skip Christmas this year. I do know how you feel, but I pray that the Holy Spirit will change your heart to want to celebrate His birth. Ask the Lord to change your outlook on the upcoming holiday. Maybe put up one decoration or a nativity set. Take one day at a time. The Lord is right there with you.

In December, right before our divorce in January, Bob and I signed all the necessary papers for me to keep the house and all the bills. I remember the first Christmas I was divorced. I felt as if I would not be able to go through the Christmas holidays, as my heart was hurting. I felt like it was tearing apart inside my chest as the enemy was attacking my mind with all that I had done wrong the previous year.

I wondered how I would be able to go through the Christmas holidays. Bob had the other woman in his life and was planning all that they were going to do through the holidays with both sets of children. I was still upset with myself that I had divorced Bob. I was hurting for our children, as well as having to deal with Bob and the other person.

But God! The Lord started speaking to my heart and got my attention. I started fasting and praying that Bob would repent, having godly sorrow, come to his senses, and want to come home for Christmas!

Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.  2 Corinthians 7:9-10

I know the emotions you are battling day and night. I started praying and knew in my heart, for the sake of our children, I had to remove the spirit of heaviness, depression and oppression off of me. I asked the Lord to give me the joy of the Lord to celebrate Christmas, in spite of my circumstances. I realized that Christmas was more than gifts and glitter, but truly the celebration of my Lord Jesus Christ’s birthday. I needed to participate and wanted to share this very special time with our children. What memories was I going to give our children this Christmas? I had to make a choice! You must also make a choice.

How about buying just one new decoration this year and make it a family outing? In fact, you could bake some cookies or banana bread to make your house smell good as you start decorating your tree. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but make it known that regardless of your present circumstances, you are going to celebrate the Lord’s birthday.

You may have to ask for some help to put up the Christmas lights or do a little bit each day. Let your home become an evangelistic tool, proclaiming the celebration of the true meaning of Christmas to your family and friends.

What else can you do to get your heart and your home ready for Christmas? Put on Christmas music. Yes, you will probably cry and have memories of you and your spouse, but then start preparing your heart and home, just in case your spouse should drop by or come home for Christmas. Enjoy this month preparing your heart, your children’s hearts and your home to celebrate with others the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Men, will you offer to help your children and wife decorate the outside of your home? Yes, pray before you offer and get permission from the Lord. May I give you another idea? Ask your church if a group of people, not you alone, could go help and decorate the homes of other singles or widows. What a blessing you would be! Do not allow the enemy to steal anything else from your family this year. May you radiate the love and joy of the Lord in celebrating Christmas this year!

God bless,
