UNLOAD THAT BAGGAGE

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.  1 Peter 5:6-7 (NLT)

Sarah struggled up the bus steps, her overloaded backpack weighing her down. She accidentally hit several students on their shoulder as she made her way to the back of the bus. “Sorry,” she mumbled repeatedly. Sarah could feel their eyes following her progress and heard one of them whisper angrily to their seatmate, “What does she have in there? Her whole locker?”

Sarah heaved the backpack onto the seat and sat down beside it. Tears began to fill her eyes. Little did they know, she DID have her whole locker in there. Sarah had never been able to master the combination on her locker. She was always late for class and always had to get someone in the office to come with the key to unlock it. It just seemed easier to carry her stuff around all day than deal with the looks she got from the other kids and the heavy sigh of the janitor as he once again opened her locker for her.

There were very few students left on the bus when they got to Sarah’s stop. She hoisted the heavy pack on her shoulders once again and made her way to the front. The bus driver gave her a smile as she came forward. “That’s quite a load you’re carrying there,” he said. “A little thing like you shouldn’t have to be carrying all that baggage around.”

Tears came to Sarah’s eyes and she told the bus driver WHY she was carrying such a heavy load. As she started down the steps, she heard him keying his mic but the doors closed before she could hear who he was talking to.

The next day during homeroom, her teacher approached her. “Sarah,” she said kindly, “I hear you’re having some locker problems. Why don’t we go to the office and try and figure out what’s going on.” Sarah followed unwillingly down the hall. She was pretty sure no one would be able to help her. She just wasn’t smart enough to figure out the locker and never would be. She was resigned to carrying all that baggage the rest of the school year.

Sarah’s teacher spoke to the school secretary and told her what was going on. The secretary pulled out a big black book with lots of names and numbers. When Sarah told her the locker number and the combination she had been given, the secretary smiled. “Well, no wonder you can’t get that open. They gave you the wrong combination.”

Armed with the right combination, Sarah was able to get that locker open after a few practice tries with her teacher. It was so nice to be able to unload that heavy backpack and know she could get what she needed from it easily. The teacher gave her a hug and said, “Isn’t it nice not to carry around so much baggage?” Sarah had to agree….it sure was!

All of us carry some baggage around with us. Some of us have heavier loads than others. Some situations are just plain tough. But just like Sarah, you don’t have to carry that baggage all the time. That heavy load of confusion, hurt, tears or maybe even anger, that doesn’t need to be a part of your life. You need to get rid of that baggage before it makes you crash.

Sarah spent a lot of time carrying around heavy baggage that she didn’t need to carry. All she needed to do was to go to the right person for help. It’s the same with you. You know where to go. You know who to run to. Jesus is there to take that load for you. He WANTS to take that load for you. He wants you to be light in His light. He makes this promise to you in His Word.

“Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads. I will give you rest. Accept my work and learn from me. I am gentle and humble in spirit. And you will find rest for your souls.”  Matthew 11:28-29 (ICB)
