Thursday is Thanksgiving Day here in the United States. We pause from our busy schedules to give thanks for God’s bountiful blessings, in good times and in bad.

Give thanks in all circumstances.  1 Thessalonians 5:18

It is easy to thank God for the good things that happen in our lives. But it is difficult to give thanks for the not so good things that happen to us. Does this scripture mean that we are to thank God even for the bad things that happen to us? In a word, yes.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.  1 Chronicles 16:34

In the midst of the good times and bad, joy and sorrow, smooth sailing and raging seas, God’s love for you endures forever. His goodness remains no matter what circumstances you may be facing in your life. Thank God for all the good in your life and thank Him again for being with you during your trials. He loves you dearly and He is with you always. Thank Him for that.

I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.  Psalm 7:17

Many times God uses the difficulties in our lives to draw us closer to Him. Divorce prompted me to take inventory of how I was living my life, which resulted in a major shift in priorities. I had been a lukewarm Christian. The trauma of divorce brought me to my knees and I cried out to God for help. People and things had become more important to me than my relationship with God. I had to reprioritize my life and began to live out my faith in Christ. I thank God to this day for allowing me to go through the valley of divorce because it opened my eyes to see how much I needed Him, in both the good times and the bad. I felt His love and mercy in a new way. He gave me strength to weather the storm raging in my home and comfort in the knowledge that He would never forsake me. How could I not thank Him for that?

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.  Psalm 28:7

I would be dishonest if I told you that letting go of my “right” to anger and hurt over the breakup of my family was easy. I would not be telling the truth if I said that I had no difficulties in trusting God with my family and future. It is hard to let go of these emotions. It is hard to trust God with everything. However, as time went on, I found that holding on to anger, hurt and fear was a barrier in my relationship with God and prevented me from experiencing His joy. God wants us to have joy in our relationships with Him. He desires to pour immense blessings on His children. Letting go of pain and fear, trusting in God’s unlimited love and care, is the only path to joy. When we experience this joy, a thankful heart is a natural result to His love and care.

I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.  Psalm 118:21

The world bombards us with promises of joy that ring hollow. Freedom to do what we want, without consequences, is an empty promise that only leads to disappointment and despair. Your spouse will not find joy in disregarding her covenant marriage vows in the pursuit of worldly happiness. Walking in the ways of the Lord is the only path to true joy. Those who follow this path will renew their strength and hope.

Give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.  Psalm 107:21

God has your entire life in the palm of His loving hand. You can rest assured that He loves you beyond compare. Never for a moment has God ceased caring for you. He is compassionate and loving. He knows the trials you are facing and is using these difficulties to mold and shape you into His image. Relinquish control of your life to God and let His love flow into your heart. God only desires good for you. Rejoice in His love. I pray that God’s love will lighten your burden and give you joy beyond compare this Thanksgiving Day. Give Him thanks for all that He is doing and has done for you.

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  1 Corinthians 15:57

I give thanks to God for your faithfulness to your wedding vows. May the Lord bless you richly for your stand. God bless you, my dear Brother. You are in my prayers.
